    Clinical Psychologist has a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology/ Abnormal Psychology, M.Phil degree in Clinical Psychology from certified institutes (NIMHANS, AIIMS, IHBAS, MANIPAL, GMCH-32 etc.) and Ph.D is optional. They are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) .

    Clinical psychologist, particularly are trained in testing and assessment, aiding the diagnosis of patients by assessing their cognitive functioning including, attention and concentration, intelligence, memory, and assess personality. They treat in non pharmacological ways, meaning, without using medication, but with different kinds of psychotherapies suiting the individual and the problem areas its decided.

    Where as a Psychiatrist will have an MBBS degree and MD in Psychiatric medicine, and are qualified to diagnose and prescribe medicines for psychiatric disorders. They are registered with Medical Council of India (MCI).

Where as an in-depth approach is followed by a Psychotherapist. This means that a they would concentrate on the emotions and experiences that you have observed growing up-as a child or as a young adult-as well as your current symptoms and issues to shed light on how these interactions have influenced who you are today. Moreover, clinical psychologists usually are well-versed in assessment and testing. However, the lines between the two do overlap.

    Therapy has no age and gender restrictions. Anyone can seek therapy if they feel so. Generally, people in times of distress should seek out help to manage their stress better. Persons dealing with trauma should consider therapy. Various kinds of therapy have proven effective with people overusing substances or facing addictions. Sometimes, if you feel like nothing is working out or no one is listening to you, you can always contact a psychologist.

    Q. What is biofeedback?

    Biofeedback Therapy is offered for adults as well as for children (as part of the paediatric program). Painless sensors are attached to the patient’s body which provide feedback information to a computer. The data depicts physiological information graphically like muscle tension, skin temperature and breathing patterns. It also measures Skin Resistance, Heart Rate, Peripheral Blood Volume and Brain Waves. The specialist identified the problem by analysing the data and suggests subsequent therapies.

    Psychotherapy was found to be as successful as face to face as through video conferencing. But that does not refer to people who are actively suicidal or suffer from acute psychotic symptoms. It was found that tele-psychotherapy was less successful in such cases. Hence, telepsychotherapy / counselling is recommended for those with somewhat less serious problems.

    The first session is for 45 minutes to 1 hour and involves history taking, initial assessment and discussion of a treatment plan. The following sessions can also vary from 45 minutes to an hour each.

    The sessions are confidential and strictly non-judgmental. However, the confidentiality agreement is violated if the patient is classified as detrimental to himself or others.

    No. Medications are prescribed by psychiatrists and Dr. Preeti is a clinical psychologist, she can make the diagnosis but However, if she   sees the need for the same, the patient will be directed to the nearest and competent psychiatrist available.

    Q. What is the nature of the relationship between the doctor and the patient?

    The therapist’s relationship is purely ethical and professional, and intended for care. The therapist is at liberty to break the therapeutic alliance in circumstances of conflict of boundaries. This relationship is not like that of friends.

    Q. Who will benefit from Psychotherapy?

    Firstly you don’t have to earn a diagnosis to be benefited by Psychotherapy, if you have a problem which you have tried to resolve by your self or by talking to your friends and still feel struggling with it,  you will benefit from therapy with a trained Psychotherapist.
